Switzerland alpine family cycling vacation
Day One: Family ride to Montreux via Nestle's Factory At the Lausanne train station, your guides will greet you for a bike fitting and map review before we cycle up through lush vineyards and then breeze down through enchanting villages. We’ll meet local winemakers, taste their wines and learn about the colorful history of this region. We‘ll visit historic Vevey, home of food giant Nestlé and burial place of Charlie Chaplin, then cycle on to Montreux, famous for its Jazz Festival. A destination for outstanding hospitality, Montreux is the perfect place to have our first gourmet dining experience together, and then retire for the night. Switzerland Bike Tour Photo: Day 1 family photo - rest stop Day Two: City of Montreux to the village of Gstaad We follow the gentle contours of the Upper Rhöne to Aigle, capital of the Chablais wine region. We’ll tour the town’s fortified castle before taking the cog railway up to Les Diablarets, where we’ll enjoy lunch at a local restaurant. Here, if desired, one can make the final climb to Col du Pillon by ski lift. The afternoon spin is a glorious downhill ride off the beaten track through rolling pastures to Gstaad, a small Alpine village with a reputation for being one of the most luxurious destinations in the world. Switzerland Bike Tour Photo: Day 2 you bike path to Gstaad Day Three: Gruyéres Cheese Factory The tour continues downstream, along the banks of the River Sarine, to the medieval town of Gruyéres, famous for its cheese. We will enjoy a splendid lunch, then visit a chocolate factory and cheese maker to get a real taste of the town. The scenic train ride back to Gstaad will be a most relaxing and memorable treat. Switzerland Bike Tour Photo: Day 3 dinner wtih friends Day Four: Interlaken Family dream land A good three mile climb to start the day takes us up to Saanenmöser (1279m) for another long downhill ride along the gentle flowing Simme River. In Spiez, we’ll enjoy lunch, and then take to the magnificent Thüner See. A boat will take us across the lake, so we can marvel at the towering mountain panoramas before heading into Interlaken. In Interlaken you will have a free night to explore the city and find the perfect spot for dinner. Meal: Breakfast Destinations visited: Gstaad, Spiez, Interlaken Distance cycled: 40.3 km / 25 miles
Switzerland Bike Tour Photo: Day 4 ride to Interaken Day Five: Epic family day in Grindelwald From Interlaken, we’ll cycle to Lauterbrunnen - the location Switzerland’s most awesome waterfalls. There are over 72 falls in the area, two of which are the tallest in all of Switzerland. The falls are such a grand sight that Goethe and Byron have written odes to some of the falls of Lauterbrunnen! We’ll continue to Grindewald, where we’ll have a gourmet picnic by the river, and then the option of paragliding. The final view overlooks the Aletchglacier, the longest glacier in Europe. From Grindelwald, we’ll cycle back to Isenfluh, where you will have the option of returning to Interlaken by train or continuing on bike. There will also be an optional rail ride to the highest railway station in Europe, the Jungfraujoch. The railroad climbs through the front face of the Eiger, through a sea of ice to an altitude of 3454m. Returning to the Hotel du Nord this evening, we’ll indulge in a final gourmet feast. Switzerland Bike Tour Photo: Day 5 kids will become Swiss Day Six: Interlaken After breakfast and a final bike or hike around the village, we will see you off at the train station as you head on to your next destination. Meal: Breakfast Accomplished: Total Satisfaction! TRIP TOTAL: 198.8 KM/ 123.2 MILES, averaging 40 km/ 24.5 miles per day. Optional longer rides available each day.
