DuVine Bike Tours in June – Summary Notes from the Road

With our spring bike tours coming to an end and our summer bike tours in full swing, we decided to share with you a peek at what DuVine guides and guests have been up to on our bike tours in Europe. The month of June provided our guests with amazing weather and overall great tours. We hope you enjoy!

Bike Tour Jordan

The Monastery of Petra

Bike Tour in Jordan – Raslan took our guests on DuVine’s  first ever bike tour in Jordan and it was a huge success. The deserts seemed to span endlessly, giving our guests a great perspective of the historic landscape in Jordan. Though we were traveling through the desert, great food and wine did not escape us. The picnics enjoyed by our guests during the dry and warm bike rides were welcomed and satiating. The guests had a great time visiting a region rich in history and culture. In addition, they got to visit one of the most spectacular sites in the world, Petra.

Bike Tour France

Blind Wine Tasting in Bordeaux

Bike Tour Bordeaux – Our trip filled with as much wine as you can want was a success on every level. Tommy guided the May trip in Bordeaux to winery after winery, enjoying the beautiful French plains all along the way. Our guests’ taste buds were satisfied by more than just the wine, as the food of the region is extremely satisfying. A highlight of the trip was a blind wine tasting that proved quite difficult for all involved. It looks like everyone had a blast though.

Bike Tour Switzerland

Serenity in Switzerland

Bike Tour Switzerland – Switzerland is truly one of the most beautiful regions in the world thanks to its mix of deep green fields, snow-capped mountains, and crisp blue lakes. DuVine guide Jenn showed our guests what spring in Switzerland is all about. The rich colors of the blossoming flowers provided a striking landscape for our guests to bike through and experience.

Family Bike Tour Israel

Family Adventure in Israel

Family Bike Tours – In June, we had several family tours across Europe. Our guests got to enjoy France, Italy, and Israel, respectively, right on the brink of the summer months. In addition to bike riding and hiking, our families got the opportunity to ride horses, shoot crossbows, and swim… the whole package. As the photos show, traveling to amazing places around the world is a perfect way to spend family time.

The Inaugural Jordan Adventure Tour

From inception to completion…our first adventure tour in Jordan was everything we envisioned, and MORE! There’s nothing like seeing a vision become a reality.

Cycling the mud flats in Jordan

You might recall our initial blog about Andy’s visit to Jordan where he and local guide, Rakan, created what was to be our new active adventure in Jordan. Well…here is the result!  Jordan…DuVine style!

Yes, our first group proved that there is certainly no need to fear a visit to Jordan. They encountered nothing but a safe, welcoming and truly magical place! Each day was filled with plenty of fun, fascinating history and packed with adventure.

The Petra experience was filled with awe inspiring moments. A visit to Petra is, in and of itself, a truly awesome event, but when combined with some DuVine touches, it takes on a whole new dimension.

adventure travel jordan

Riding.

It began with a scenic off-road ride from Shobak to Little Petra – an amazing up-close and personal way to experience this unique landscape.  Riding from Shobak to Little PetraUpon arriving in Little Petra, they met up with Ahmad Ammarat, one of the best local guides, who offered a fascinating history about the rose of Petra. From there, they headed out to hike a back trail into Petra – definitely not a conventional approach, but well worth the ‘wow’ moment. Not only did they happen upon the magnificent Monastery monument, but a picnic lunch awaited their arrival at the top of the mountain with sweeping views of Wadi Araba.

The back trail approach to the Monastery

The adventure continued with an extensive visit to the sites of Petra, accompanied by another local guide whose knowledge of both the history and the local scene inspired an impromptu change in the itinerary to accommodate a unique dining experience. Guests were invited to participate in cooking a meal of local cuisine in a Petra Kitchen with the chef, along with some fellow travelers from around the world, followed by drinks at the Cave Bar (located in an actual Petra carved cave). Talk about a great night and a magically wonderous place!

Invitation to cook in the local kitchen

It was then off to another other-worldly place…the Wadi Rum desert for a journey into Bedouin life. They began the adventure with a pleasant ride in the vast mud flat region. On the ride back, the sun was setting, and they made a spontaneous stop to climb one of the sandstone rock formations to sit and watch the sunset in complete silence – a truly ethereal experience.

Biking in Wadi Rum

Next stop, Rum village, where they met Salem, their Bedouin host and guide, and rode in a jeep deep into the desert, where an authentic Bedouin tent (specially built for them) was set at the foot of small mountain, seemingly aglow,  bathed in the light of candles.

adventure travel jordan

Hiking the sand dune

A special traditional dinner: a Zarb of lamb, chicken and vegetable cooked in a sand oven ensued. After a day of transformational moments, the guests decided to continue the experience and chose to sleep outside of the tent underneath the starry night.

Their transformational moments in the Wadi Rum continued the next day with a new adventure – climbing (well, a combination of hiking and scrambling) to the Burda rock bridge with Salem, followed by a well-earned BBQ picnic lunch waiting for them in the shade. A jeep tour around the desert followed, where they were able to climb a giant sand dune and let out their inner-child with a hopping, skipping and carefree run down the dune. Silly, clumsy, and childlike…but wow…pure freedom!

Can it get any better? Well, that’s for you to decide…

adventure travel jordan

Camel ride

The next morning found them at Khazali mountain, mounting camels to start their trek back to the village. Then it was off to the Red Sea for some snorkeling and off to Feynan Eco Lodge in the desert mountains of Wadi Araba for a special candle-lit dinner and an after dinner rooftop stargazing experience.

The perfect end to a awe inspiring trip, right?

Well…not yet…

The next morning was a bike ride with another local Bedouin guide through the region. He treated the guests to an interesting look into Bedouin life and culture – with a visit to the copper mines, a ride through Feynan village and a stop in a Bedouin family’s tent for fresh yogurt and Bedouin tea. The day finished with a ride back to the lodge for lunch, and a drive to the Dead Sea and their new home for the next two nights, Kempenski Ishtar resort. Here they enjoyed excursions to Madaba, the Dead Sea Panorama complex and a hike into the Mujib Canyon.

Unfortunately all good things must come to an end…but not without a great last night featuring a slide show of their awe-inspiring adventure in Jordan. A simple reminder of their magical experience of Jordan…DuVine style!

Andy’s Top 10 Hotels of 2010

Welcome to our third installment in the DuVine Adventures Top 10 for 2010.  Our first two Top 10’s were Top 10 Bike Rides and Top 10 wines and now we bring you our Top 10 Hotels for 2010.

“SLEEP” is an equal and integral part of the DuVine equation for luxury bicycle tours and adventure travel…so when it comes to our choice of hotels, we select not only the “must-see” places of interest, but also properties that provide a real sense of local charm. Remember…DuVine style is all about the experience…be it on the bike, while dining, sampling the local potables, or relaxing for the evening. Hence, I take great care when deciding which properties measure up our standards. And although each may be special in its own right…I’d like to share where a few of my favorites places to stay have been this year.
I guess you could call these my top 10 hotels of the year…(in no particular order of preference…)

Orto degli Angeli

Orto degli Angeli in Umbria
Imagine lying back in bed after a wonderful day cycling through the Sagrantino vineyards and a delicious dinner in a restaurant located in the remains of a Roman amphitheater and looking up to see an original Frescoe painted on the ceiling above you? That’s right…our ancient villa, Orto degli Angeli, with the original noble family still in residence, is a museum in itself. This historic hotel where Francesco Antonini dei Conti Angeli Nieri Mongalli’s family has lived since 1788 integrates architectural elements and original building materials from the ancient world and overlooks the ruins of an ancient Roman theatre and temple. A vaulted underground room, which was a part of the two thousand year old theatre, serves as the dining room of the restaurant, creating an unforgettable dining experience. You will sleep like royalty in this unique property.  You will stay here on our bicycle tour in Umbria, Italy.

Flocon de Sel

Flocon de Sel in Megeve, France
What can I say? When I first read the mission statement from the owners of this hotel – “to stay unique, to give to our guests the possibility to make the most of the tranquility of the place, with luxury services offered in a convivial atmosphere, without ostentation and at the same time help with exploring the landscape, this unique environment which is ours” – I knew this place would be DuVine! The service is flawless, the location – set in the mountain pastures with commanding views of the valley below – is incredibly intimate and the 2 star rated Michelin restaurant definitely put this on the top 10 list! This is available on our bicycle tours in the Alps.

Villa Beccaris in Piedmont
What makes a hotel special? Is it the personal connections made with the staff, the incredible views out your window, the linens, the impeccable and attentive service, the amount of luxury services offered? Or is it a just a feeling you get when you enter a room? Perhaps sometimes that is all it takes! When you walk into the limonaia , the glassed-in Belle Epoque breakfast room with views over Barolo vineyards at Villa Beccaris, you will understand why this hotel ranks on the list! You will stay here on our bicycle tour in Umbria, Italy. You will stay here on our bicycle tour in Piedmont, Italy.

Hotel Adriana

Hotel Adriana in Hvar
Not only is it Croatia’s first and only member of The Leading Small Hotels of the World… but the views from the Adriana  – a panorama that includes the Cathedral, the Arsenal, the Venetian piazza, the yacht harbor and the bay all in one – are absolutely stunning! Talk about an island paradise… and the Top bar is the place to be! Location, location, location. Oh…and a little bit of St. Tropez and Ibiza all in one. You will stay here on our bicycle tour in Croatia.

Bastide de Gordes in Provence
Talk about the perfect perch! Bastide de Gordes sits high above the Luberon valley offering some absolutely gorgeous views. What better way to spend an afternoon post-ride than lounging by the pool admiring the scenery? or better yet…at the world-famous Spa Sisley located on the property? Yes, definitely a must on the list. You will stay here on our bicycle tour in Provence, France.

Bastide de Gordes

Relais San Maurizio in Piedmont
There is no place that makes you feel as if you are on top of the world [literally and figuratively] like the San Maurizio! Surrounded by the Langhe hills with panoramic vineyards views, it is the perfect vantage point for a journey of the colors, fragrances and flavors of Piedmont. Originally a 17th century monastery, the property has been transformed into a stunning and discreet resort…one that gives new meaning the word exclusivity! Oh, and did I mention the vinotherapy spa Caudalie? It is epic zen - italiano style! You will stay here on our bicycle tour in Piedmont, Italy.

La Chiusa

 La Chiusa in Tuscany
This charming little relais and restaurant holds a very special place in our hearts. La Chiusa is the product of the lifelong work of two of our dear friends, Dania and Umberto. It was Umberto’s vision that transformed his family’s medieval olive mill into a stunning luxury hotel. In many of the hotel’s fifteen rooms, you can find old millstones and other reminders of the building’s agricultural past.  Umberto is a true Tuscan man and makes sure his guests get anything they want. Every afternoon you can find him overseeing his splendid staff from his table under the pergola where he will be happy to share a bottle of prosecco, fresh grapes from his vineyards, and the story of how he brought running water to the town.Dania is a world-renowned Tuscan chef and the Ristorante La Chiusa, where we eat on the first night of the tour, is her baby. She has devoted a lifetime to preserving traditional Tuscan cuisine, using only the freshest seasonal ingredients and age- old methods. Her meals are unforgettable. She always makes a point of coming to our table after the meal and giving us a tour of the kitchen or autographing copies of her cookbook. There is also an extraordinary selection of local wines. You will stay here on our bicycle tour in Tuscany, Italy.

Chalet Royalp

Chalet Royalp in Villars
Imagine being nestled in at your 1,300 ft ‘”base camp” of Villars sur Ollon in the heart of the Vaud Alps looking out from your private balcony at the idyllic setting that spans in front of you – featuring a spectacular panorama extending from Lake Geneva to Mont Blanc.  This charming chalet is the perfect ski “lodge” …the perfect combination of a typical mountain lodge atmosphere with the exquisite elegance of an exclusive high end resort. Oh, and it’s also the first ski-in and ski-out hotel in the Vaudauoise Alpes – offering direct access to the ski resort. You will stay here on our ski trip in the Alps.

Iguana Crossing on Isabella Island, Galapagos
Staying here is like escaping to your own private island – scarcely populated except for the flora and incredible variety of fauna to be found – including, of course, the ubiquitous marine iguanas. Located in between the pristine white sand beaches with their emerald green water and directly behind a wildlife-filled lagoon, this spot couldn’t be more special. Even better, as  you relax in your room, you can listen to the soothing sound of surf and watch the volcano beyond the wetlands come alive.  Yes, a true island getaway awaits you at Iguana Crossing! This hotel is available on our adventure travel Galapagos Islands tour.

Beach at Iguana Crossing

Taybet Zaman in Petra, Jordan
Step back in time, but not in luxury at this uniquely modern interpretation of 19th century Jordan – complete with an exotic dash of Arab indulgence. As you walk through the village and its ancient stone structures, you feel transported back to the old village, complete with the scents and sounds of the market…a very sensory experience. Staying at Taybet Zama, with its unique blend of modern elegance and rustic charm, is unlike any other typical hotel stay…especially when you consider that just outside your window is a view unlike any other…one of the modern wonders of the world, Petra. You will stay here on our adventure travel tour in Jordan.

A DuVine Day in the Desert – Bedouin Style

Thinking about something different like adventure travel in Jordan and wondering what an active adventure in the Jordanian desert would be like? Why not take a closer look at one of our DuVine days in the desert with a sneak peak at what to expect midweek…

Wadi Rum desert

Welcome to Wadi Rum!

Ok…so what is Wadi Rum, you might ask?  Wadi Rum is a valley cut into the sandstone and granite rock in south-west Jordan. It has been inhabited by many human cultures since prehistoric times and is dotted with massive rock formations. It is virtually untouched by humanity and its destructive forces. Here, it is the weather and winds that have carved the imposing, towering skyscrapers, so elegantly described by T.E. Lawrence as “vast, echoing and god-like”.  Much of David Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia was filmed in Wadi Rum.

And it is here on the outskirts of this rock wonderland in Rum Village that we will meet up with our Bedouin host, mount a jeep and begin our journey deep into the Wadi Rum Protected Area to reach our Bedouin campsite. And when I say you should prepare to be impressed…I mean it.

Bedouin campsite

Not only will this momentous landscape fascinate you, but the hospitality you receive will astound you. Bedouins are most famous for their hospitality; it is part of their creed – rooted in the harshness of desert life- that no traveler is turned away. Yes, the hospitality of the Bedouin is legendary and strangers are welcomed into the Bedouin home with wonderful shows of courtesy and respect. The dangers and hardship of the desert have fostered this approach and, as they are isolated people, encountering others is cause for celebration. A new arrival is often reason enough for a feast which is usually celebrated in Bedouin poetry, sayings and songs.

Hence it is no surprise that upon arrival at our campsite, we meet for a feast - a ‘Zarb’ – the traditional Bedouin dish of meat and vegetables cooked underneath the desert sand. Oh, and did I mention that it is also a great location to watch a truly magical sunset?!

Bedoiuin 'zarb' feast

As we gather around the campfire and get to know our Bedouin hosts (with music being played and traditional songs being sung) we begin to learn something about their exceptional culture.

If you are wondering how such a mystical evening might end…the choice is yours: spend the night inside your Bedouin goat-hair tent or take your mattress out to sleep under a canopy of twinkling stars.  Whatever you decide, you’ll need to rest up…as you have an exciting day in the desert ahead! (And honestly, that shouldn’t be a problem – unless of course, you are uncomfortable with the sound of silence!)

Now imagine waking up to the silent desert….peaceful, quiet…truly another world! What a way to let the day begin!

Breakfast will usually be served by 7 a.m. After breakfast, we head out on a short drive to Jebel Burda – passing through a wide valley with magnificent cliffs and sand dunes. Reaching the trailhead by the foot of Burda we start our mountain trek towards the famous rock bridge of Burda. (This route involves some relatively easy scrambling across open rock slabs and through a maze of alleys.)  But there is no need to worry, as your guide will lead you on the best route to a small plateau and into a hidden gulley which offers an awesome view of the bridge above. We will then climb a short steep wall (safeguarded by a climbing rope ) and walk over the rock bridge to enjoy awe-inspiring views across the whole desert region. And, like my aforementioned statement, prepare to be impressed!

Rock bridge

Descending back down, we will cross wonderful open slabs and scramble down in a steep groove. Once back at the foot of the mountain after our 3-hour round-trip, we’ll meet in a shaded spot for lunch (and a siesta?) before we proceed with our jeep tour of Wadi Rum – exploring some of the desert’s attraction sites such as Lawrence Spring, Lawrence House remains, and Al Khazaali Canyon.  Oh,and even better…we’ll stop at one of the big sand dunes for an opportunity to kick off your shoes and embrace your inner child when we climb up and then run down…carefree in the soft sand.

How could the day get any better? Well…we could always find a perfect spot to watch another enchanting sunset before heading back to the camp, gathering around the campfire, and enjoy another wonderful Bedouin dinner cooked in the ember of fire and spend another peaceful night in the desert…

It’s always summer somewhere!

Warm weather, smooth roads and unique experiences is what we love about bike tours and adventure travel during the summer months, and chasing that summer time feeling around the world is what we are doing at DuVine.

check your mailbox

It used to be that when the summer and early fall came to a close in Europe and North America we could look forward to a little rest ourselves but we have grown steadily over the years and now offer bike tours and adventure travel in every major continent, during every season, which means that we can provide our guests with a bit of “summer somewhere” in the world no matter what the weather or season may be in their home town.

This year, because of the number of new tours and locations, we have actually decided to create a specific winter catalog for our guests, which highlights the following destinations and tour types:

postcards from paradise

The nice thing about these tours is that if you are from the Northern Hemisphere they are all taking place during the summer in the Southern Hemisphere, so it will be your chance to push back on old man winter.  Having said that of course, there is nothing wrong with winter, especially if you love skiing, so we have included a great ski trip to Switzerland for those who say “winter, bring it on!”

Just to warn you, the catalog is not your standard 10 pages stapled in the middle and dropped in your mailbox, because that isn’t the DuVine way.  No, we took the unique approach (thanks to our incredibly talented staff) of devising a catalog that when opened folds out into a set of cool postcards highlighting each destination, perfect for mailing back to your friends when you are on your trip and they are pulling on their sweaters and turning up the heat back home.

So, check your mailbox and prepare for a grand opening – we hope the postcards from paradise will add a little excitement to your day…as you watch your dreams literally unfold before you and inspire plans for winter travel.

And don’t forget to send us a postcard from paradise!

If by chance you don’t receive the winter catalog give us a ring or send us an email at webinquiries@duvine.com and we will send one out to you right away.

Adventure Travel Jordan – Video Blog – DuVine TV

We recently added a great new tour, Adventure Travel Jordan, to our list of exceptional bike tours and active travel offerings at DuVine Adventures.  One of the best things about adding new trips of course is their creation, which involves visiting the locations, talking with the locals, discovering and setting up the luxury accommodations, restaurants, and wine tastings.

In creating this trip we saw a land that is both old but at the same time modern and accommodating including:

Check out this video to get the inside scoop of what this trip and the land of Jordan is all about, you will be surprised at how dynamic and diverse this country is and the adventure that awaits travelers.

Adventure Travel in Jordan

Filed under: Adventure Travel, Bike, Jordan, Tours — Tags: , , , , — Bike tour guru @ 1:22 pm

Wow!

Let’s just start there….as that pretty much sums up my experience in Jordan. Jordan is a completely different world…almost unreal.

On the road from Dana

I traded in my suite at the 5 star Mount Zion hotel with all the comforts of luxury living for a bike, a donkey and trek through Jordan on a Bedouin camping adventure to see Petra. Talk about a paradigm shift.

As I headed out mountain biking with my guide Rakan, I was blown away by the scenery. Wild lands abound, with not a soul to be seen for miles and miles (except the random commuter on camel) - we basically had this epic landscape all to ourselves.

Our ride took us from Dana to our Bedouin camp near little Petra where we would be staying for the night. Here we enjoyed a typical Bedouin meal and dined al fresco under the light of the moon  (the only light we had other than our campfire). After dinner we gathered around the campfire to listen to our local tribe play music. As we retired to our tent for the night I was fascinated by the sounds of silence and the incredible quiet that prevailed. It gave a whole new meaning to a peaceful night’s sleep.

Approaching Petra

We began the morning with some delicious coffee and prepared for our 12 km hike to Petra. Our unique approach took us over cliffs and around the back side to the monastery where we met up with local guide for our private tour of Petra. I cannot begin to explain how amazing this place is! Not only outrageously impressive, but mindboggling. You trek through miles of no mans land and in the middle of seemingly ”nowhere” this incredible ancient city literally carved into the red rock emerges from the landscape…it almost appears as if a figment of your imagination – a mirage in the desert. You can understand why it was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and has been called ”one of the most precious cultural properties of man’s cultural heritage”.

Upon arrival we settled in for a wonderful [and well earned!] lunch after our hike and then went on to tour the epic ruins including the monastery, the tomb and the theater.

The monastery at Petra

And truth be told, I felt like Indiana Jones…or at least like an extra on the set of the Last Crusade! Even better, we returned at night to walk through the ancient city by candlelight. Again, words cannot explain….

Back to a bit of reality as I spent the evening at the 5 star Petra Taybet Zaman Hotel – an ancient Jordanian village converted into a hotel - and a welcome oasis.

After my once-in-a-lifetime visit to Petra, another legendary adventure awaited as I was off to the Wadi Rum desert for more hiking, biking and camping under the full moon and the stars in  Bedouin tents with our gracious hosts. Wadi Rum, also known as the Valley of the Moons, is one of the most significant regions in Jordan. The area is spotted with fascinating yellow, white, red and brown sandstone mountains that are cut by wide canyons and unique colorfully decorated geological formations. The landscape is distinct for its natural delicate arches and bridges and mushroom-shaped rock configurations carved and shaped naturally by years of wind and erosion.

Crossing the rock bridge

It was one of these rock bridges that I had the opportunity to cross on my first hike through Wadi Rum…let’s just say it was truly a wild [and rather nerve-racking] experience! One false move and…

I’m glad to say I made it across –  safe and sound and in one piece….

The Wadi Rum area has so much to do and see. I spent another day hiking up to the top of a giant desert dune…talk about some serious exercise in the heat of the desert! I couldn’t wait for something to drink and the exciting descent – a fast and unforgetable ride ’skiing’ down barefoot on the sand. A major sand fest! (I think I may still have some residual sand lingering on or in me)

Hiking and skiing the dune

Luckily Rakan and Salem, my guides, were ready waiting in the shade with a great lunch – sheltered away from the heat of the day. Some more hiking followed before we headed back to our tent for another dinner under the stars and a traditional Zarb (Bedouin meal) cooked under the ground. Exhasted, I easily fell asleep in the ultra silent night.

I forgot to mention that there is some great moutain biking in Wadi Rum as well. We spent a day riding through the National Park in a Moab-like setting. Oh, and the Feynan Eco Lodge where we stayed  is a really fascinating place. The hotel is completely solar powered and the candlelit environment is a serene and peaceful retreat set against the unique desert landscape.  This Eco Logde is made possible by a unique partnership between EcoHotels and the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature, a Jordanian NGO devoted to the protection of the Kingdom’s finest natural landscapes

Alas as my visit was coming to an end… I found that the  perfect place to conclude my trip was again, at the Dead Sea. However…truth be told, I really prefer the ambiance on the Jordanian side… and the Kempinski Hotel Ishtar where I stayed is absolutely amazing! The rooms are set amidst gardens dotted with lagoons, waterfalls and private pools, where ancient olive trees mingle with palm trees, providing you with absolute privacy in a serene and unmatched setting.

From start to finish…my Jordanian experience was out of this world…literally and figuratively. What an adventure to behold – from the ancient mysteries of Petra, the fascinating and generous Bedouin people and culture, to the epic hiking and biking in a landscape that defies explanation. This is definitely a must see place that should be added to everyone’s bucket list. These memories alone will last a lifetime.

Get ready for this ultimate multisport adventure coming soon to DuVine!
