Located in the heart of the Upper Alentejo, Estremoz has a long history, which many trace back to the time of the Roman occupation. The town played a valiant part in the Christian reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula, and its name appears to mean “extreme place”, in other words a borderland between two military domains. King Afonso III gave orders for a settlement to be established and granted the first royal charter on 22 December 1258.

The choirmaster of Evora, Manuel Severim de Faria, described it as 'one of the noble towns of Portugal' and referred to 'the large public square, surrounded by houses on all sides' The town was of strategic importance in the Wars of Restoration (1641-1666), when the castle became a focus for resistance against the Spanish armies.
King João V founded in the town one of the most spectacular arsenals of the time, later burned to the ground by the French invaders. The vast majority of the population sided with Dom Miguel in the War of the Two Brothers. General Carmona, head of state after 9 July 1926, granted Estremoz the status of city, through legislation published on 5 September 1926.
