You will visit grottos, explore the historic aspects of important towns such as Sarlat, La Roque Gageac, Beynac, and Les Eyzies. See chateaux, and stay in charming and welcoming country inns & chateau.

Day 1 Arrive in Bergerac - a large town with good rail access and services. This is your gateway into the famous Black Perigord. The historic city is very picturesque and offers visits including the Maison des Vins - for local wines. Hotel and dinner included, orientation and bike fitting at 6pm at your hotel.

 

To visit in Bergerac:

  • La Maison des Vins, the headquarters of the Council of Wine makers of the Bergerac region.
  • The Musée Régional de la Batellerie, contains displays about the river-trade in the area as well as about barrel making and viticulture.
  • The Musée du Tabac, unique in France, housed in a 17th-century house on rue de l'Ancien-Pont has collections of pipes and tools to illustrate tobacco’s  history.

Day 2
For your first riding day you head to Trémolat through le Buisson de Cadouin. The ride is fairly challenging, with a stunning view point at the Cingle de Trémolat. In Trémolat
you stay in a beautiful 4* Relais & château hotel. Take some time to discover the stunning gardens or relax in the pool, before enjoying a gastronomic dinner in the hotel's Michelin restaurant.

Distance: 55 km route.

To visit in today:

  • Trémolat, famous for the view from the Belvedere de Rocamadou, a viewpoint overlooking one of the lovely river meanders, the Cinglé de Trémolat.
  • Lalinde, a 13th C. English-fortified town

Day 3 Your destination today is the beautiful town of Sarlat. Before that, you will reach the village of Les Eyzies, the capital of Prehistory! Take time to visit this very charming town and its sites/museums including the Font de Gaume, before cycling on to Sarlat. This town with its cobbled streets, old roofs, and warm stone walls give an exceptional heritage. You have a 3 star hotel in the center of the historical center. Dinner on your own.

  • Maison de la Boétie, birthplace of Etienne de la Boetie (in 1530), it is now used to host summer exhibitions
  • Medieval Cathedral Saint Sacerdos
  • Chapelle des Penitents Bleus, remarkable for its pure Romanesque style

Day 4 Take some time in the morning to visit Sarlat before getting back on your bike and cycle to Belvès! Along the way, you will stop at the medieval town of Domme . You will also pass the site of La Roque Gageac, a village with traditional houses nestled against the cliff sides and a town recognized as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France. You spend the night in a beautiful 3* hotel in the heart of Belvès. Dinner on your own.

To visit today:

  • La Roque Gageac, a magnificent village officially classified as one of the most beautiful in France
  • Domme, an example of a medieval fortified town known as a bastide, was founded by Philip the Bold in 1281. Graffiti by Knights Templar imprisoned here following the dissolution of the order in 1307 may be observed on the tower gates.

Day 5 A nice flat to rolling ride back to Bergerac, you start by passing the town of Cadouin where you can visit the cestercian abbey whose main feature is the cloister within which are 15th century sculptures. Return to same starting hotel in Bergerac center. Dinner on your own tonight.

To visit today:

  • Cloister of Cadouin, a masterpiece of Gothic art (15th and 16th centuries)
  • Château de Lanquais, combinining aspects of a fortified medieval castle with a Renaissance stately home

Day 6 is departure day. You can take your time with breakfast before catching a train that will take you back to Paris.
