Ride through endless olive groves and lush vineyards on the Puglia Bike Tour. Meander along pristine coastlines riddled with stunning sea caves. Explore tiny fishing villages where locals set out every day to bring back the bounty of the sea. Discover the unique trullo dwellings in the Itria valley. You’ll delight in the labyrinth of whitewashed village streets in beautiful Locorotondo, the bright blue of the Adriatic Sea that surrounds you, and a private cooking class with our favorite local chef. Enjoy regional specialties that include rare olive varieties, orecchiette pasta, and Salice Salentino—the powerful red wine from Lecce.

Puglia, Italy, was named one of National Geographic’s Best of the World travel experiences for 2014. The list reflects what’s authentic, culturally rich, sustainable and superlative in the world of travel today.

Tour by Day

Day One: Welcome to Puglia
Your guides will meet you at the Brindisi airport, and then we’re off to start our Puglia tour in the enchanting walled seaport of Otranto. Enjoy a welcome Prosecco while reviewing the basics: bike fitting and safety talk. Then we’ll set off on our first ride from the coast through a sea of olives trees. You’ll soon realize why Puglia is the biggest olive producing region in Italy as you cycle through this landscape devoted to the olive. Stop at a local cantina for a wine tasting before we loop back into Otranto. Tonight our chef Pasquale will delight us with his original dishes.

Meals: Light Lunch / Dinner
Destinations: Otranto
Accomplished: 13 miles / 21 km, elevation gain: 250 meters
Accommodations: Hotel Palazzo Papaleo

Day Two: Sea Caves, Sanctuaries, and Seafood
Today we’ll cycle one of the most stunning coastal roads with breathtaking views of cliffs and bays. Pass through fishing villages like Porto Badisco and Santa Cesarea Terme. Stop for a seafood lunch at our friend’s restaurant overlooking the cerulean sea. After lunch, opt for a longer ride to Leuca where the land ends at a lighthouse and sanctuary that has drawn pilgrims for centuries. From Leuca you can transfer back to the hotel or continue the pilgrimage, cycling back for an epic total of 106 kilometers. This evening, explore historic Otranto; your guides are happy to recommend their favorite local restaurants for dinner.

Meals: Breakfast / Lunch
Destinations: Santa Casarea Terme, Castro, Santa Maria di Leuca
Accomplished: 20 miles / 32.5 km, elevation gain: 850 meters (Longer option: 30 miles / 48.5 km; or epic 66 mile / 106.5 km ride)
Accommodations: Hotel Palazzo Papaleo

Day Three: Locorotondo and Ostuni
This morning we’ll transfer to the stunning Itria Valley for a tour and tasting at a Pugliese olive mill. Here we’ll try oil from 600-year-old olive groves. Continue on to Locorotondo, the picturesque village known for its maze of white-washed streets and considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. Stop for lunch at our friend Franco’s local trattoria. Then ride through the rolling hills and stunning green countryside to our hotel, located in the historic white city of Ostuni. Spend the afternoon exploring this enchanting city and its historic streets before enjoying a Michelin-starred dinner at our romantic spa hotel.

Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner
Destinations: Cisternino, Locorotondo, Itria Valley
Accomplished: 18 miles / 30 km, elevation gain: 279 meters
Accommodations: Relais La Sommità

Day Four: Mimmo and Masserie
Begin the day with a ride across the Itria Valley through pastures, vineyards, and the greatest concentration of Puglia’s trulli (the odd-looking conical dwellings typical to this region) on your way to Alberobello. Here, our friend Mimmo will show us around his town before inviting us to a home-cooked lunch in his family’s trullo. After lunch, opt for a transfer to our next hotel or cycle there through peaceful villages, enjoying spectacular views of the coast from the edge of the Itrian plateau. Our final hotel is a masseria, or fortified farmhouse, that has been transformed into a five-star luxury hotel with a stunning pool and spa.

Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner
Destinations: Alberobello, Fasano, Itrian plateau
Accomplished: 21.8 miles / 35 km, elevation gain: 506 meters (optional additional 37.4 miles / 60 km)
Accommodations: Masseria San Domenico or Masseria Torre Coccaro

Day Five: Cooking and the Canali
Cycle along the coast past the Roman ruins of Egnazia and the quaint fishing villages of Savelletri and Torre Canne. Turning inland, we’ll explore the tiny roads (canali) that wind through endless olive groves. Climb and be rewarded with a stunning view of this colorful canvas: the bright blue Adriatic set against the rich brown and vibrant olive green hues. Continue downhill to our friends Laura and Filippo’s beautiful masseria and organic farm where we’ll prepare our own lunch during a cooking class using seasonal ingredients grown on the property. This evening we’ll celebrate this amazing region with an unforgettable traditional dinner at our favorite local restaurant.

Day Six: Goodbye to Puglia
