Tour by Day
Day One: Welcome to Oregon!
Your guides will meet you at your hotel in Portland and we’ll head west to the heart of Oregon’s Pinot Noir country. At the hotel, we’ll start with the essentials: bike fitting and safety talk, then we’re off on our first ride. A gentle loop ride will take us around the rolling hills of the Dundee wine region, winding their way past numerous wineries in an area reputed to be home to some of the finest Pinot Noir in the world. Later, enjoy an evening wine reception followed by dinner at the Allison Inn’s award winning JORY restaurant, where our chef specializes in “paying tribute to Oregon’s agricultural bounty.”
Meals: Lunch / Dinner
Destinations: Penner Ash, Adelshiem Wineries
Accomplished: 20 miles / 32 km
Day Two: Newberg Loop Rides
Today we’ll ride a meandering route that explores quiet lanes and unveils stunning views, past a host of great little wineries. The emphasis today is more on the smaller wineries, many of which are family-run and / or organic. Visit the towns of Dayton, Carlton and Lafayette on this loop ride. Enjoy some of the most spectacular views of the northern Willamette Valley and beyond to the snowcapped peak of Mount Hood. Tonight we’ll enjoy another delectable meal featuring local specialties.
Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner
Destinations: Stub Stewart State Park, Historic Forest Grove, Aramenta Winery
Accomplished: 20-45 mile / 32-73 km
Day Three: On the Road to Welches
Begin with a transfer from the Willamette Valley to the slopes of Mount Hood. In the small lumber town of Sandy, we’ll start our ride along quiet lanes by the Sandy River through conifer and mixed-wood forests. Through the gaps in the trees you’ll see tantalizing glimpses of the snowcapped Mount Hood. Today's ride ends in an area known as little Switzerland, with its flat, glacial valley and distant snowcapped peaks. Arrive in the small community of Welches, part of the Mount Hood Village. Tonight we’ll stay at Resort on the Mountain, home to the first golf course in the Oregon.
Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner
Destinations: Sandy, Brightwood, Welches
Accomplished: 25 miles/ 40 km
Day Four: Welches to Hood River
Today, we’ll cycle around the north side of Mount Hood on a series of ups and downs (opt to take the van to avoid these if you prefer), before enjoying a long descent into the Hood River Valley, riding past vineyards, orchards and some of the best views of Mount Hood. Continue to the town of Hood River, at the junction of the Columbia River and revel in the view of the Columbia River Gorge. Outside Magazine named Hood River one of America’s Best Towns, with its collection of wine bars, shops, galleries, and a micro-brew pub with a deck overlooking the gorge.
Meals: Breakfast / Lunch
Destinations: Cooper Spur, Draper Girls Orchard, Hood River
Accomplished: 25-45 miles / 40-73 km
Day Five: Loop Ride Out of Hood River
Begin the day cycling the Historic Columbia River Highway on a ride that Bicycling Magazine described as one of the greatest rides in U.S. We’ll head east along the Columbia River Gorge and marvel at the stunning views at every turn as we climb high above the gorge then descend back down to river level. As you ride along the gorge, think back to the transcontinental expedition of Lewis and Clark. The 33-man expedition hauled roughly 30 tons of equipment along this route! If you prefer to take a rest from cycling today, we can arrange whitewater rafting or kayaking on the nearby White Salmon River.
Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner
Destinations: Mosier, The Dalles, Hood River
Distance: 25-50 miles / 40-80 km
Day Six: Goodbye to the Hood River
On our way back to Portland, your guides will transfer you down the spectacular Columbia River Gorge for a chance to visit the spectacular 620-foot Multnomah Falls.
