  • Day 2

    Sponge Diving and Home Cooking

Begin the day with breakfast at sea as we sail to the island of Kalymnos. We’ll drop anchor in the harbor, which happens to be the hub of Greek sponge diving—an industry that has flourished in Kalymnos since ancient times. Learn more about this daring and fascinating trade at the sponge dealer’s shop before setting off for a ride to Vathys Bay. A gradual climb brings us to the island’s southern coast, where we’ll admire views of the Aegean Sea before descending to the eastern shores. Pedal into the village of Vathys and break for Greek coffee or ice cream. From here, meet back up with the boat or keep riding all the way to the island’s northern side. After lunch onboard, we’ll cruise to Leros island for an afternoon swim in Agia Marina Bay. With hearty appetites after a day in the sun and sea, join a Greek family for dinner in their home. We’ll even learn to make local dishes like tzatziki and dolmades. Kalí óreksi!

    Kalymnos Sea Kayaking

This morning’s ride around Leros takes us to a Byzantine chapel—the first of many scattered across the island, including one church that’s way out in the sea! After cycling, take a refreshing dip at Alinda Beach, followed by lunch back onboard the gulet (and perhaps a nap as we cruise to Palionnisos Bay). Our next adventure is a sea kayaking excursion: paddle alongside the cliffs of Kalymnos, where we might even see rock climbers scaling the sheer limestone faces. We’ll lift anchor once more and make our way to the remote shores of Pserimos for the night. Enjoy dinner on deck, specially prepared by our private chef.

  • Day 4

    Ancient History

Have breakfast en route to Kos, where our day begins with a visit to Casa Romana—a restored villa that shows what Classical Greece was like 2,000 years ago. Next, visit the ruins of the ancient healing temple of Asclepion where the Hippocratic Oath was formulated. We’ll transfer to the starting point of our hike in the mountain village of Zia and trek to the highest point on Kos: revel in the 360-degree views of surrounding isles, including Kalymnos (where we kayaked yesterday), Nisiros (where we’ll have dinner later), and the Turkish coastline. Hike back down or hitch a ride in the van for lunch in Zia and a tasting at the Triantafyllopoulos winery. After one more transfer, we’re back on the yacht for an afternoon of swimming or sunning. Later, cruise on to the volcanic island of Nisiros and disembark right in town. It’s a maze of winding back streets and whitewashed homes—all bustling with locals as they socialize and greet neighbors—but we’ll stake out a spot to watch the sunset on a black-sand beach before dinner at a taverna in town.

Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner
    Destinations: Kos, Zia, Zipari, Nisiros
    Accomplished: 3 miles / 5 km hiking
Longer Option: 5 miles / 8 km hiking
    Accommodations: Atalante

  • Day 5

    Volcano Day in Nisiros

Our morning ride along the coast of Nisiros offers unforgettable views of the Dodecanese islands dotting the Aegean Sea. Afterward, we’ll transfer high up to a village that overlooks an impressive volcanic crater. Even though it’s been dormant for the last 130 years, this sleeping giant is still active! Researchers keep a close eye on the volcano, and so will we as we explore the hydrothermal craters billowing with sulfurous steam. Lunch is served back on the boat before we begin cruising to Symi, where swimming and kayaking are on the schedule. Disembark in the harbor and dine on your own at a Symi restaurant of your choosing—our guides can recommend a few hidden gems among the neo-classic houses and late 19th-century churches.

    Meals: Breakfast / Lunch
    Destinations: Nisiros, Symi
    Accomplished: 12 miles / 19 km, elevation gain: 640 feet / 195 meters
    Longer Option: 23 miles / 37 km, elevation gain: 2,568 feet / 783 meters
    Accommodations: Atalante

  • Day 6

Sunrise in Datca, Sunset in Knidos

Cruise with the morning sun to our first destination of the day: the Turkish town of Datca. Once we’ve cleared customs, we’ll head out for a ride that follows the southern shores of the Datca Peninsula. The Mediterranean scenery is truly memorable as we pass alongside azure-blue bays and sun-baked villages, stopping in a local tea house for Turkish coffee and treats like baklava or börek. Come to a triumphant finish in Knidos, home to a temple that honors Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love. This afternoon, have a leisurely lunch, snorkel in the ancient harbor, or relax with some cold beer on the bow. We’ll set out for a short hike to a lighthouse—the perfect place to catch sunset on the Aegean—and work up an appetite for our dinner on deck.

Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner
    Destinations: Symi, Datca, Knidos
    Accomplished: 16 miles / 26 km, elevation gain: 1,296 feet / 395 meters; 1 miles / 2 km hiking
    Longer Option: 29 miles / 46 km, elevation gain: 2,821 feet / 860 meters
    Accommodations: Atalante

  • Day 7

    Aphrodite’s Temple and Bustling Bodrum

Today will be an education in antiquity as we visit some fascinating ancient sites. First is the famous temple of Aphrodite, around which an entire city developed—brush up on Greek mythology as we visit the ruins and theatre that started it all. We’ll hike to the next bay as our boat chases us along the coast, meeting us in time for a post-hike dip in a remote and sheltered bay. If you’re ready for post-lunch siesta, drift off to sleep as we sail the Keramos Gulf to Bodrum. Then it’s time for more ancient exploration: meander Bodrum’s 15th-century castle with its labyrinthine passageways and lookout towers designed to keep away invaders. Tonight, join the bustle of open-air bazaars and harbor-front restaurants as we head to our farewell dinner of tasty Turkish meze.
