Vienna to Dürnstein
Meet your guides in Vienna for a transfer to the fairytale village of Dürnstein. Our adventure begins with a hike up to the intriguing ruins of Dürnstein Castle. Along the way, learn all about how King Richard Lionheart was held prisoner here during the Crusades. At the top we’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking view over the huge, meandering Danube River and its undulating vineyards, small villages, and picturesque countryside. Back in Dürnstein, take some time to explore the small town and visit its many wonderful shops. Enjoy the first of two evenings at the historic Hotel Richard Löwenherz.

Take the ferry across the river and continue cycling to Melk, where we’ll enjoy lunch in town. After, visit the thousand-year-old Benedictine Monastery, which inspired Umberto Eco to write The Name of the Rose. A relaxing boat ride returns us to Dürnstein, where the evening is yours to explore the town and try the local fare—perhaps some Marillenknödel, a sweet dumpling filled with a fresh apricot.

Stop Lednice Château for a thrilling falconry demonstration, then continue cycling to Valice Château to explore its 14th-century wine cellars. Afterward, we’ll ride to the late-Renaissance town of Mikulov, learning about life as it was behind the Iron Curtain along the way. In Mikulov, sample some local Moravian wines—the kids will enjoy a special grape juice tasting of local varietals—before heading to dinner. Afterward, we’ll head to the Renaissance-era Nelahozeves Château for a private tour and a picnic lunch in the courtyard.
