Holland’s cycling paths are laid out through natural heritage and protected areas, city centers, and an incredibly scenic countryside, which makes a bicycle the golden key to a true appreciation of Dutch culture.

Tour by Day
Day One: Welkom bij Holland
Meet our guides at the Zwolle train station where the adventure begins. Our bikes are waiting for us in Elburg, a scenic nearby town surrounded by 13th-century fortifications. Enjoy a light lunch of bitterballen and local delicacies before a bike fitting and safety talk, then cycle from the town gates into the countryside. Quiet, scenic bike paths and forest roads lead us to our first hotel: the Relais and Chateaux property Hotel Het Roode Koper. Hear from a local historian how the people of this area risked their lives to hide Jewish citizens during WWII. Tonight, an elegant Michelin-starred dinner sets the tone for the incredible week ahead.

Destinations: Elburg, Vierhouten
Accomplished: 18 miles / 30 km, elevation gain: 123 meters
Accommodations: Het Roode Koper
Day Two: Off to Utrecht
Today we head southeast towards the bustling city of Utrecht. Our route begins in the countryside and takes us along the Zeedijk (sea dike) to the scenic seaport of Spakenburg, an historic fishing village since the middle ages. We visit our friend Marco’s shipyard where traditional botters (fishing boats) are built, then join him for a coffee and a stroll through town—you may even spot locals sporting klompe, the wooden shoes that have become a symbol of Holland. Cycle or shuttle to our hotel for some relaxation before dinner at the home of our friend and local cook, Yvette.
Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner
Destinations: Ermelo, Spakenburg, Utrechtse Heuvelrug, Utrecht
Accomplished: 26 miles / 41 km, elevation gain: 200 meters (Longer option: 42 miles / 67 km, elevation gain: 250 meters)

Day Three: The Windmill Loop
Today we head north along Utrecht’s waterways and through the countryside dotted with tidy villages and brick castles. We pause at a working windmill where our friend Joop shows us around inside and explains how these ubiquitous structures keep the locals’ feet dry by pumping water away from the lowlands. Continue pedaling along the Rijn back towards Utrecht and enjoy lunch at our favorite local spot. Utrecht offers all the appeal of Amsterdam, but remains relatively under the radar—see what we love about this city as you spend the afternoon exploring cobbled streets and canals. Tonight, we reconvene at an excellent microbrewery to sample Trappist ale and innovative cuisine.
Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner
Destinations: Utrecht, Maarssenbroek, Loosdrecht

Day Four: Utrecht to Gouda
Cycle past Kasteel de Haar, one of the most beautiful castles in Holland, on our way to the town of Gouda, a city made famous for its cheese, smoking pipes, and stunning fifteenth-century Gothic architecture. Cycle along verdant country lanes and taste the famous Gouda with cows surrounding us in the field. Arriving in Gouda, our friend Artuur, a local chef, welcomes us into his house for a light lunch fit for a king. Then we’ll transfer to our next hotel, the luxurious Duin and Kruidberg. Tonight is a free night, so relax and dine at the hotel Bistro or go out in the nearby city of Haarlem.
Meals: Breakfast / Lunch
Destinations: Oudewater, Gouda
Accomplished: 28 miles / 45 km, elevation gain: 154 meters

Prepare to experience a stunning loop ride to the tulip capital of the world. We’ll start with an extraordinary 15 kilometers of car-free biking between the dunes and the coast. In Lisse we’ll ride by all the tulip fields and, in the spring, visit the famed Keukenhof Gardens for an exclusive private tour with a Keukenhof gardener. Continue north back to historical Haarlem, the namesake of the New York neighborhood. Return to the hotel for some rest and relaxation before enjoying a final celebratory dinner at our hotel’s Michelin-starred restaurant.
