Transportation to and within Italy: There is an extensive train network throughout Italy and train travel is fairly inexpensive and efficient. There are also good bus systems so it is possible to get to almost any town or village by some form of public transportation. You can also rent or lease a car in Italy. The two major international airports are in Rome and Milan. There are many airports throughout Italy for internal and European flights.

Italy's Language : The official language is Italian, but there are many regional dialects. German is spoken in the northeastern region of Trentino-Alto Adige and there are small French-speaking populations in the Valle d'Aosta region to the northwest and a Slovene-speaking minority in the Trieste area to the northeast. Many Sardinians still speak Sardo in the home. Italian Currency and Time Zone: Italy uses the euro, the same currency used in most of Europe. 100 euro cents = 1 euro. At the time the Euro was adopted, its value was set at 1936.27 Italian Lire (the previous unit of currency).

Italy's time is 1 hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT+1)

Entering Italy: Non-EU visitors to Italy need a valid Passport. The maximum length of stay is 90 days. For longer stays, visitors will need a special permit. EU visitors can enter Italy with only a national identity card. Religion in Italy: The main religion is Catholic but there are some small Protestant and Jewish communities and an increasing Muslim immigrant population. The seat of Catholicism is Vatican City, the Pope's residence. In Vatican City you can visit St. Peter's Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, and the extensive Vatican Museums. Major Travel Destinations in Italy: The top travel destinations in Italy include the 3 cities of Rome (Italy's capital), Venice, and Florence, the region of Tuscany, and the Amalfi Coast.

Rome, Italy Arriving & Departing

Leonardo da Vinci/Fiumicino (FCO)

Rome (FCO) (Fiumicino):www.adr.it is located 20 miles southwest of the city.

To / from the airport: There is a direct rail link to Termini Station in central Rome and a bus service every 15 minutes. Taxis are also available to the city.

Facilities:Outgoing duty-free shop, rental car, ATMs, bank and bureau de change and bar/restaurants.

There is now a flat 60 Euro fareby taxi from Fiumicino airport to ANY destination within central Rome.

The Leonardo Express train operates from Fiumicino Airport to Termini Station in the center of Rome. Journey time is 35 minutes. (The express refers to it being a non-stopping service rather than a high speed journey.)  Be sure that you validate your ticket before getting on a train - the machines are at the entrance to the individual platforms. From the airport trains operate from 6:37am until 23:37. From Termini Station they operate from 5:52 until 22:52. Refer to:

The cost is currently 11euros one way.

TIP: If you are travelling to other destinations from Rome by train it's a wise move to buy the tickets in advance and secure a seat as there are quite long queues at most of the Rome counters during the day.

The train station in Rome is huge.  There are schedules posted in the station but it is wise to confirm the train and destination before you actually get on.  There aren’t a bunch of employees around to help so this can be a bit nerve-wracking.  It's quite a long walk from the front of the station to the platforms the services leave from (10 minutes). A tip is to go down a level where there are moving walkways in both directions.

In the event that your destination in the city is in an area other than around Termini train station, you might wish to consider taking a regional train instead of the Leonardo Express. Those trains are even more frequent and stop at all stations en route, proceeding to locations North of Rome after crossing the city. They do NOT stop at at Termini station (which, as the name suggests, is a terminal station, but actually refers to the ancient Roman Baths or Terme, which used to be located there), but stop at other important stations, such as Ostiense, Trastevere, and Tiburtina (next to Rome's bus station). The fare is 5.50 euro per ride to any station within Rome city limits.

Florence Arriving & Departing

Arriving by plane at FLR Amerigo Vespucci airport you can reach the city center by taxi - the ride is about 15 min (according to the traffic) and it will cost about 20 euro. You can also take a bus VolaInBus ("Fly in Bus") to the central train station (4.50 euros) and then take a taxi from there to the hotel (less than 10 euro in every location of the city center).

Arriving at PSA Pisa airport you can reach Florence by taxi - 80 km it will cost about 100 euro - or by train which is directly connected with the air terminal (sometimes requiring a change in Pisa Centrale station - about a one hour ride for about 6 euros).  There is also now a VolaInBus service to the Florence SMN train station.

Arriving by train at Santa Maria Novella station you are right on the city center. Many hotels are located nearby the train station or are walking distance from there. If you take a taxi from there you can reach every area of the city center for less than 10 euro. To get a taxi you have to take the left exit of the train station and make the line. Florence is linked to many locations via Italy's excellent railway services.
