Tour by Day

Day One: Welcome to Umbria
Your guides will meet you at the train station, and then we’re off to the ancient Roman town of Spoleto where the imposing Rocca fortress dominates the skyline. Ride into the countryside of the Umbrian foothills to a local olive mill and enjoy a rustic lunch and olive oil tasting. From here it’s a quick ride through the olives to our home for the next two nights: a reimagined farmhouse resort. Spend the afternoon relaxing by the pool, or continue your adventure with some uncharted extra riding. This evening we will dine at our farmhouse’s restaurant, sampling some of Umbria’s most characteristic dishes.

Meals: Lunch / Dinner
Destinations: Spoleto, Poreta
Accomplished: 14 miles / 22 km, elevation gain: 250 meters (Longer option: 25 miles / 40 km)
Accommodations: Borgo della Marmotta

Day Two: Trevi and Truffles
Our day will begin on the valley floor with a ride along peaceful canals to the Roman village of Trevi. We will eat our lunch in the historic center of town, and after spending some time exploring, we’ll continue on our bikes through the foothills back towards our hotel. At the end of the day, we will have the opportunity to go for a truffle hunt (season depending) with a truffle hunter and his dogs. The reward: a truffle-themed dinner.

Destinations: Fonte di Clitunno, Trevi, Poreta
Accomplished: 23 miles / 36 km, elevation gain: 325 meters (Longer options available)
Accommodations: Borgo della Marmotta

Day Three: The Olive Groves of Montefalco
Start your day with a ride through fields and farms to the gorgeous Antonelli Winery in the Sagrantino wine-producing region. Here, our host Wendy will teach us how to prepare typical Umbrian dishes during an unforgettable cooking class and lunch including wine pairings from the vineyard with each course. Save room for a glass of Sagrantino passito with her homemade dessert. After lunch, cycle through the olive groves to Montefalco. Take some extra time to explore this historic hilltown, and then descend to our medieval palace in the village of Bevagna. Tonight, your guides can recommend the best local spots for dinner.

Day Four: The Trail of Saint Francis
We’re off to Assisi today to explore the home of Saint Francis and the art his life inspired. Along the ride, visit the winery of our friends, Maria Palma and Pietro, for a small-scale, homegrown, and totally organic viticultural experience. Then it’s on to Assisi and our luxurious five-star spa hotel, located just within the medieval walls. In Assisi, opt to visit important sites like St. Francis’s hermitage, or relax in the peace of the spa, built inside the structure of a Roman bathhouse from 100 AD. Tonight, your guides will take you to our favorite restaurant to see how the locals eat.

Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner

Day Five: The Serenity of Subasio and Spello
Wake up with a visit to the Basilica of Saint Francis before departing from the medieval streets of Assisi and pedaling out into the valley below. Our destination is the hilltop town of Spello, where our friend Roberto will lead us in a tasting of Umbrian wines paired with lunch at his world-famous enoteca. Then cycle along the spectacular Via degli Ulivi, or “Olive Way,” or opt for a more challenging ride through Monte Subasio national park. This afternoon you can spend the afternoon exploring Assisi or relaxing at the hotel’s award-winning spa before we all enjoy the sunset over Assisi together at our final aperitivo and dinner.
