Tour by Day

Day One: Welcome to Liguria
Your guides will greet you at the Genoa Piazza Principe train station and whisk you to the seaside town of Camogli. Toast to the beginning of our trip and set off on a short hike to a hidden village for lunch at our favorite local trattoria. After a bike fitting, safety talk, and map review, pedal through the maritime pines and coastal villas en route to the seaside town of Santa Margherita. Palm trees and pastel buildings skirt the cerulean sea as we ride the final kilometers to our hotel in Portofino. Settle into your room, take a stroll around town, and get ready for tonight’s dinner overlooking the harbor.

Meals: Lunch / Dinner
Destinations: San Rocco, Santa Margherita, Portofino
Accomplished: 45 minutes hiking; 15 miles / 25 km, elevation gain: 460 meters

Day Two: San Fruttuoso and Cooking with Fausto
We’ll start our day with a hike along the rocky coastline of this scenic peninsula. Our destination is the secluded 10th-century Abbey of San Fruttuoso, accessible only by foot or by boat. After lunch at Giorgio’s restaurant, take the ferry back to Portofino or challenge yourself with a hike back through the Regional Park. Spend the afternoon relaxing on the beach, kayaking, or snorkeling in the picturesque bay of Portofino. This evening we’ll visit our friend Fausto at his restaurant/home/cartoon gallery in the hills above Santa Margherita for an entertaining cooking class and Ligurian dinner using the freshest seasonal ingredients.

Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner
Destinations: Portofino, San Fruttuoso, Santa Margherita
Accomplished: Hiking in the Parco Naturale di Portofino; 2 hours to San Fruttuoso; 2-3 hours return loop to Portofino
Accommodations: Eight Hotel Portofino

Day Three: Portofino to Portovenere
Beginning from the port of Sestri, we pedal out of town to climb the famed Passo del Bracco. After reveling in the rewarding views, it’s time for a thrilling descent to Levanto, followed by one final push to our well-deserved lunch. To celebrate our arrival in the Cinque Terre, we’ll roll into Monterosso—the first of the five villages—and board a private boat for an afternoon cruise. Relax on the water and soak in the multi-colored panoramas of the Cinque Terre, then dock right at the doorstep of our next hotel in Portovenere.

Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner
Destinations: Sestri Levante, Passo del Bracco, Monterosso, Portovenere
Accomplished: 32 miles / 53 km, elevation gain: 1,169 meters

Day Four: Exploring the Cinque Terre
Today we immerse ourselves in the Cinque Terre. A quick boat ride delivers us to Vernazza, considered the most picturesque of the five villages. From here we’ll hike to Corniglia, the next village, and through our favorite section: the terraced vineyards, leading to lunch in Volastra. Choose to continue hiking down to Manarola and catch a boat back to Portovenere, or make it a multi-sport day with a bike ride which takes us high above the Cinque Terre, along the Golfo dei Poeti, and back to the hotel. Tonight, your guides are happy to provide recommendations for dinner.

Meals: Breakfast / Lunch
Destinations: Vernazza, Corniglia, Volastra
Accomplished: 2-2.5 hours hiking; Optional ride of 16 miles / 27 km, elevation gain: 481 meters
Accommodations: Grand Hotel Portovenere

Day Five: Golfo dei Poeti
Today we say goodbye to the Cinque Terre and head for the lesser-known Golfo dei Poeti. The “Gulf of Poets” earned its name for the artists and writers who have been beguiled by this picturesque bay for centuries, including Lord Byron and Percey Shelley. Start with a boat ride across the Golfo, then hop on the bike and pedal through the coastal villages of Tellaro and Lerici. Descend into Magra where the towering peaks of the Alpi Apuane come into view and end the ride at our gorgeous accommodations. Relax by the pool or hike down to the secluded beach before regrouping for a final farewell dinner, featuring fresh pastas and seafood.

Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner
Destinations: Tellaro, Lerici, Ameglia, Montemarcello
Accomplished: 20 miles / 32 km, elevation gain: 785 meters

Day Six: Goodbye to the Italian Riviera
Wake this morning to incredible views over the Mediterranean—the perfect last look at the Italian Riviera. Relax over a leisurely breakfast at the hotel, then say ciao to this region however you prefer: perhaps lingering at the hotel, or taking one last optional ride. Your guides will send you off to your next destination from the La Spezia train station.
