The First Taste of Portugal's Interior

Welcome to Portugal—we hope you brought your appetite! Your guides will meet you in Oporto for a transfer to the UNESCO town of Guimarães. On a guided tour, learn about the major events that took place here in the 12th century and led to the birth of an independent nation, as evidenced by the inscription “Aqui nasceu Portugal” (“Portugal was born here”), which can still be seen in the city’s old wall. Then it’s off to the village of Vidago for a light lunch followed by a bike fitting and safety talk. Our first ride is a warm-up through the verdant countryside surrounding our palatial hotel. This evening, we meet Chef Seamus Mullen and taste his interpretation of the culinary traditions from Portugal’s Trás-Os-Montes region.

    Flavors of the Trás-Os-Montes

Breakfast will power us up for today’s ride to the town of Chaves, just south of the Spanish Galicia border. Pedal into the heart of Trás-Os-Montes, which translates to “Behind the Mountains”—an area that was long isolated from the rest of Portugal, and as a result, remains largely undiscovered. This region is just starting to share in the success of the nearby Douro Valley, due to a new generation of micro-wineries and olive oil producers. Ride past small valley hamlets surrounded by family farm plots and climb tranquil back roads shaded by century-old sycamore trees. We descend finally into Chaves, once the frontline of the Portuguese defense against Spanish incursion. Enjoy lunch in the city’s historic downtown, then ride or shuttle back to our hotel. The afternoon is yours to lay out by the pool or enjoy the spa. Tonight, we dine at an authentic family restaurant, sampling customary food from Trás-Os-Montes.

Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner
    Destinations: Loivos, Chaves
Accomplished: 28 miles / 46 km, elevation gain: 839 meters
Longer Option: 40 miles / 64 km, elevation gain: 1,093 meters

  • Day 3

The Douro River and Port Wine

Today we ride south towards the Douro Valley and our destination in the riverside wine town of Pinhão. Whether you choose to begin pedaling from our hotel or start further out from the mineral-water village of Pedras Salgadas, the destination is the same: we’ll reach Casa de Mateus, a Baroque 18th-century palace famously depicted on bottles of locally produced rosé of the same name. After lunch, hop in the van or continue cycling as we snake through charming hamlets and follow hillsides rippled with terraced vineyards. Our final descent brings us to the majestic Douro River and our hotel for the night, located right on its banks. This evening, dine at our favorite quinta—a Portuguese wine estate—where Chef Seamus will wow us with an amazing meal developed around the estate’s own voluptuous red table wines. Cap it off with the after-dinner wine that brings the region so much repute: a glass of intense, velvety vintage Port.

Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner
Destinations: Pedras Salgadas, Casa de Mateus, Pinhão
Accomplished: 30 miles / 35 km, elevation gain: 552 meters

  • Day 4

Douro's Vineyards by Boat and Bike

The day’s adventure is up to you: step straight from our hotel grounds aboard a traditional Rabelo boat for a river cruise up the Douro, or head for the hills on a challenging vineyard ride. Either way, you’ll see how Mother Nature has done her part in this UNESCO-protected valley, providing an exceptional climate for ideal vine growing conditions—though the human element of engineering is impossible to ignore, with vineyards hand-carved out of the schist over hundreds of years. After lunch, enjoy an afternoon ride along the Douro’s riverbank to the town of Peso da Régua and our hotel for the next two nights, the magnificent Six Senses. This evening you’re free to dine on your own; choose a trendy wine bar or a tasquinha (tavern restaurant) in downtown Peso da Régua, depending on your mood.

    Meals: Breakfast / Lunch
    Destinations: Pinhão, Peso da Régua
Accomplished: 17 miles / 27 km, elevation gain: 362 meters
Longer Option: 32 miles / 51 km, elevation gain: 1,310 meters
    Accommodations: Six Senses Douro Valley

  • Day 5

    The Making of a King

Today’s ride promises to be our most challenging—but not without its rewards. Pedal to the town of Lamego, first following the course of the Douro, then turning inland for a gradual climb up sinuous vineyard-sided roads above the river valley. It was here in Lamego that the Bishop of Braga crowned the first King of Portugal, Afonso Henriques, in 1140. After a light lunch in town, we’ll stop at Our Lady of Remedios and climb its zig-zagging staircases that mirror the region’s twisting vineyards, then visit Lamego’s cathedral, Our Lady of Assumption. Opt to keep riding back to the Six Senses or hop in the van and spend the afternoon beside the hotel’s tranquil pool. Our final dinner together takes place at the hotel, complete with crisp white Port wine and a gastronomic feast designed for us by Ljubomir Stanisic, known as a revolutionary among Portuguese chefs.

Meals: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner
    Destinations: Lamego
Accomplished: 17 miles / 28 km, elevation gain: 898 meters
Longer Option: 25 miles / 40 km, elevation gain: 904 meters
